How a Whitehaven Beach Day Works
Pick a departure and a boat, let the crew time Hill Inlet to the tide, and pack for a national park with no shops.
Pick Where You Leave From
Most tours leave Airlie Beach, from Coral Sea Marina or Shute Harbour, with bus pickups from the hotels; a few leave Hamilton Island and only suit guests staying there. There is no public ferry to Whitehaven Beach, so a tour, a charter or a plane is the way in.
Pick the Boat
A big catamaran is the smooth, sociable day with lunch on board. A fast inflatable gets you there quicker and adds snorkelling. A sailing boat is slower and quieter, and a scenic flight shows Hill Inlet from above but does not land. The comparison below sets four of them side by side.
Let the Crew Work the Tide
The swirl of sand and water at Hill Inlet changes with the tide, so operators reorder the day around it: some walk to the lookout first, some go to the beach first. Every listing here says the itinerary can change with the tide, wind and weather.
Pack for a National Park
Whitehaven sits in the Whitsunday Islands National Park. There are composting toilets near the camping area and no shops or cafes, so bring water, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen, and walking shoes for the lookout track. From roughly November to May, swim in the stinger suit most tours provide.

The Guide
Choosing a Whitehaven Beach Tour: Boat, Lookout, Time on the Sand
Every day tour goes to the same seven kilometres of silica sand. What differs is the boat, whether you see Hill Inlet, how long you get on the beach and whether you snorkel on the way.
A Whitehaven Beach tour is a day on the water from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island to the seven kilometres of white silica sand on Whitsunday Island, usually with a walk up to the Hill Inlet Lookout at its northern end. There is no public ferry, so a tour, a sailing trip or a flight is how nearly everyone gets there. The one this page puts first is Island Connections’ Hill Inlet Lookout and Whitehaven Beach Cruise: it leaves Shute Harbour at 9:00 AM, anchors at Tongue Point for a guided walk to the lookout, then gives you up to two hours on the beach, with a buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea and a rooftop deck on the catamaran. It is from US$186 a person (checked October 2026) and rated 4.8 from 1,105 reviews.

It is the tour for people who want the lookout and the beach without a snorkel stop: the listing says plainly that it is a sightseeing and beach day, with no snorkelling or diving. If the reef matters to you too, the fast-boat day further down does both.

Which Whitehaven Beach tour to book
The tours split four ways, and the split is less about price, which sits between about US$168 and US$196 a person for most full days from Airlie Beach, than about how you want to spend the day.
Pick the day that fits:
Hill Inlet Lookout and Whitehaven Beach Cruise
The guided walk to Hill Inlet, up to two hours on the sand and lunch on a catamaran with a rooftop deck. No snorkelling.
See dates →Ocean Rafting: Snorkel, Hill Inlet and Whitehaven
Inflatables at up to 35 knots, reef snorkelling, the lookout walk and lunch on the beach. The North option lands on the Hill Inlet beaches themselves.
See the fast-boat day →Cruise Whitsundays: Whitehaven Beach Cruise
About six hours on Whitehaven, from Hill Inlet at the north end to the swimming at the south, with a burger on the beach.
See the all-day beach cruise →Prices, ratings and review counts from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026; operators price by season and date, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The fourth kind is a sailing boat. Cruise Whitsundays’ Camira, which calls itself one of the fastest commercial catamarans in the world, includes beer and wine from 11 AM along with lunch and a snorkel, from US$182. The 62-foot schooner Providence is the slower, hands-on-the-ropes version, from US$154. The sailing guide compares the day sails and the overnight trips.
Hill Inlet and the tide
The famous photograph of Whitehaven is not the beach itself but Hill Inlet, the estuary at its northern end, where the tide drags the white sand into swirls through blue-green channels. You see it from a lookout reached by a short bush track from Tongue Point, and it changes through the day: operators and local guides agree that the pattern shows best around mid to low tide while the water is dropping.
That is why every listing on this page says the order of the day can change with the tide, wind and weather. On some days the crew walks you to the lookout first and the beach comes after lunch; on others it is the other way round. You do not need to time it yourself, but you do need a tour that goes there. Most do. ZigZag’s day walks to the South Whitehaven Lookout instead, a different view of the same beach, and Camira’s Hill Inlet walk is marked as tide-dependent. The Hill Inlet guide has the detail.
Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour or Hamilton Island

Most tours leave Airlie Beach, either from Coral Sea Marina or from Shute Harbour a short bus ride away, and most include a hotel pickup. The listings put the boat ride at 50 minutes to an hour and a half each way: ZigZag’s catamaran takes 50 minutes, Red Cat’s about an hour, and Island Connections cruises for an hour and a half because it goes the scenic way, through Cid Harbour and Hook Passage.
Staying on Hamilton Island, you are closer. Ocean Rafting runs a four-hour Whitehaven and Hill Inlet dash from US$137 and a full day with snorkelling from US$196, with 45 minutes to an hour on the water each way; both only suit guests on the island. The Hamilton Island guide compares them.
Stinger season and what to pack
From roughly November to May, box jellyfish and Irukandji can be in Whitsunday waters, Whitehaven included, and the advice is to swim in a full-body stinger suit. Most day tours lend one: Red Cat, ZigZag, Big Fury and the sailing trips list stinger suits, and Ocean Rafting a sunsuit or wetsuit. Island Connections’ cruise does not, because it is a beach and sightseeing day, so hire a suit in Airlie Beach if you plan to swim. The stinger season guide covers which months and which tours.
The beach is part of the Whitsunday Islands National Park. Tourism Whitsundays’ visitor guide describes composting toilets and picnic tables near the camping area and nothing else: no shops, no cafes. Bring water, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and shoes for the lookout track, and take everything home again.
Flying, or staying the night
You can see Hill Inlet from the air. Ocean Rafting’s one-hour Whitsundays and Heart Reef scenic flight, from US$249 and rated 4.9 from 1,776 reviews, flies over Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet on the way to Heart Reef, but it does not land; its Fly Raft package, from US$397, pairs the flight with the full boat day on the beach.
There is no hotel on Whitehaven. You can camp at the southern end with a Queensland national parks permit, or sleep on a sailing boat anchored nearby: two-day, one-night trips start at about US$343 a person, meals and stinger suits included.
What a Whitehaven Beach tour costs
Full days from Airlie Beach run from about US$154 to US$234 a person on GetYourGuide in October 2026, and the half day from Hamilton Island from about US$137. Lunch, national park fees and the stinger suit are included on most of them. Ocean Rafting adds a Queensland public holiday surcharge on those days, and some tours charge for drinks on board. The price guide lays out what each price buys, and the worth-it guide says when the day disappoints.

"We had a fantastic day 😊 We were picked up by a very entertaining bus driver and taken to the dock. The tour was simply wonderful, with lots of lovely people, both the staff and the other participants. Whitehaven Beach is indescribable. We enjoyed our “time alone” sunbathing on the beach. The food we had on the tour was fresh and delicious. 🤗 The most wonderful tour, which we can definitely recommend. 🇦🇺"
"Great day! the crew is very friendly, the food was delicious and I think you get enough time at the whitehaven beach:) the view from the hill inlet lookout is absolutely amazing!! definitely recommend, thank u for that wonderful day"
"An unforgettable experience, plain and simple! We opted for the Purely Whitsunday full-day boat cruise: a modern, spacious and comfortable catamaran, a friendly and attentive crew, a delicious buffet... The guided walk to the vantage point was safe and enjoyable, with plenty of time at the top. The 2 hours at the beach were enjoyable, with jellyfish-proof wetsuits available to borrow. In short, a perfect day!"
"A very nice tour to Hill Inlet, which was very crowded, and Whitehaven was also very busy. The large boat was ideal with a baby and a toddler. Flip flops are a good idea because your feet get wet when you get out of the dinghy. The food was delicious, but everything was cold."
"The tour guides were very friendly, and the service was excellent. The food and the tour were incredible. Highly recommended."

Whitehaven Beach Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a day at Whitehaven Beach, answered in the first sentence.
For Hill Inlet and the beach without snorkelling, Island Connections' Hill Inlet Lookout and Whitehaven Beach Cruise; for both plus a reef snorkel, Ocean Rafting's fast-boat day. Island Connections walks you up to the Hill Inlet Lookout and gives you up to two hours on the sand, with lunch on a catamaran with a rooftop deck (US$186, 4.8 from 1,105 reviews, October 2026). Ocean Rafting's inflatables reach the Hill Inlet beaches themselves and add two snorkel sites (US$175, 4.8 from 2,457 reviews). For the longest day on the sand, Cruise Whitsundays lists about six hours on the beach. The comparison table sets four of them side by side.
About 50 minutes to an hour and a half each way, depending on the boat and the route. The tour listings give the times: ZigZag's catamaran takes 50 minutes, Red Cat's about an hour, and Island Connections cruises for an hour and a half from Shute Harbour, after a 30-minute bus from Airlie Beach, because it goes the scenic way through Cid Harbour and Hook Passage. Ocean Rafting's semi-rigid inflatables run at up to 35 knots, so they spend less of the day getting there. From Hamilton Island the ride is 45 minutes to an hour.
Two hours on the sand is enough for a swim, a walk and photos; add about 45 minutes for the Hill Inlet Lookout walk. Most full-day tours give you that, with the lookout walk and a reef snorkel on either side. If lying on the beach is the point, pick a tour built around it: Cruise Whitsundays' Whitehaven Beach Cruise lists about six hours there, and ZigZag's beach-only ticket four to five. The worth-it guide goes through how to split the day.
There is no closed season, but from roughly November to May box jellyfish and Irukandji can be in the water, so you swim in a full-body stinger suit. Local operators put the season at November to May, and some say from late October. Most Whitehaven day tours lend one: Red Cat, ZigZag, Big Fury and the sailing trips list stinger suits, and Ocean Rafting a sunsuit or wetsuit. Island Connections' cruise is sightseeing and beach only and does not list suits, so hire one in Airlie Beach if you plan to swim. The stinger season guide has the details.
Around mid to low tide, while the tide is dropping, is when the swirl of white sand and blue channels shows best. Tide times change every day, which is why every listing says the order of the day can change with the tide: the crew walks you to the lookout first on some days and goes to the beach first on others. Morning light tends to give clearer water. The Hill Inlet guide explains how to read the tide table and which tours reach the Hill Inlet beaches as well as the lookout.
Not on public transport: there is no public ferry, so you go by tour, private charter, plane or helicopter. Campers can take the Whitsunday Island camping transfer from Airlie Beach (from US$70 a person, October 2026), which drops you at the beach, and you need a Queensland national parks camping permit to stay. Everyone else books a day tour, a sailing trip or a scenic flight.
Tripadvisor's travellers ranked it number one in the world in their 2021 Travellers' Choice awards. It has ranked near the top of those lists in other years too. The case for it is the sand: about seven kilometres of it, roughly 98% silica, bright white and cool underfoot even in summer, with Hill Inlet's tide patterns at the northern end. The honest worth-it guide covers when it disappoints.
Yes: Ocean Rafting runs a four-hour dash and a full day from Hamilton Island, and both only suit guests staying on the island. The Whitehaven, Hill Inlet and Lookout Dash is from US$137 a person, and the full day with snorkelling from US$196 (October 2026). The ride takes 45 minutes to an hour. The Hamilton Island guide compares them.
Most do, but not all: ZigZag's day walks to the South Whitehaven Lookout instead, and Camira's Hill Inlet walk depends on the tide. Island Connections, Red Cat, Ocean Rafting, Big Fury and the Hamilton Island tours all list the Hill Inlet Lookout. Ocean Rafting also lands on the Hill Inlet beaches below it. If the swirling sand view is why you are going, check the listing names Hill Inlet before you book.
You can fly over it on a scenic flight, and some packages fly one way and boat the other. Ocean Rafting's one-hour Whitsundays and Heart Reef flight (from US$249, 4.9 from 1,776 reviews) passes over Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet but does not land. Its Fly Raft package (from US$397) adds the full boat day with the beach, the lookout walk and snorkelling.
There is no hotel on Whitehaven, only national park camping at the southern end with a permit, or a night on a sailing boat anchored nearby. Two-day, one-night sails from Airlie Beach start from US$343 a person (October 2026), with meals and stinger suits included. The sailing guide compares day sails and overnight trips.
Water, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, swimwear, a towel and shoes you can walk a bush track in. Whitehaven is a national park beach: there are composting toilets and picnic tables near the camping area and no shops or cafes. Some tours do not supply towels, and Big Fury sells drinks for cash only, so read your listing's list too. Everything you bring comes back off the beach with you.
From about US$137 for a half day from Hamilton Island to about US$154 to US$234 for a full day from Airlie Beach, a person, on GetYourGuide in October 2026. Scenic flights start at US$249 and overnight sailing trips at US$343. Lunch, national park fees and stinger suits are included on most day tours; a Queensland public holiday surcharge applies on some. The price guide lays out what each price buys.
