Whitehaven Beach Stinger Season: Can You Swim, and in What?

Box jellyfish and Irukandji season at Whitehaven runs roughly November to May. You can still swim, in a stinger suit: which Whitehaven tours lend one, and which do not.

Updated October 2026

You can swim at Whitehaven Beach in every month of the year, but from roughly November to May box jellyfish and Irukandji can be in the water, and the advice is to swim in a full-body stinger suit.

Local operators give the season as November to May, and some say it starts in late October. From June to mid-October the risk is low. Most Whitehaven day tours lend a suit as part of the price; the main exception is Island Connections’ beach-and-lookout cruise, which does not list one.

What a stinger suit is for

A stinger suit is a thin, lightweight full-body suit, a little like a wetsuit, that covers your arms and legs and keeps the tentacles of box jellyfish and the tiny, almost invisible Irukandji off your skin. It doubles as sun protection. In winter the same operators lend wetsuits for warmth instead.

The jellyfish are not a reason to skip Whitehaven in summer; they are a reason to wear the suit and listen to the crew. The general Australian first-aid advice for a tropical sting is to call 000, pour vinegar on the sting for at least 30 seconds and get the person out of the water; Irukandji symptoms can take 5 to 40 minutes to appear, so any sting gets treated, and the crew’s instructions come first.

If you take the Island Connections cruise between November and May and want to swim, hire a stinger suit in Airlie Beach the day before. For a day where the suit and the swimming are part of the plan, Red Cat’s eco-cruise is the most reviewed Whitehaven day and lends the suit in summer and a wetsuit in winter.

When to go instead

If you would rather swim without a suit, aim for June to September. The water is cooler, the stinger risk is at its lowest, and the humpback whales pass through the Whitsundays on their migration; Big Fury’s listing tells guests to look out for them from July to September. The trade-off is wind: the south-easterly trade winds blow steadily from about May to August, which suits the sailing boats; Big Fury warns that you may get splashed on its speedboat in wet or windy weather.

The months to think twice about are January to March, the wettest part of the tropical summer, when the stinger risk is high and the weather is less settled. Tours still run, and the beach is just as white, but more days are grey, and Island Connections, for one, says its cruise goes ahead rain or shine.

When you cannot swim at all

There is no season when swimming at Whitehaven is closed. In practice the crew decides on the day: snorkel sites can be moved for the weather and visibility, and every listing reserves the right to change the plan for weather and safety. If swimming is the point of your day, book one of the tours above that lends a suit, and leave a spare day in your trip in case the weather turns. The worth-it guide covers what the day is like when it does.
